Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) Nurse Mildred is now hospitalised after getting assaulted by 5 relatives of a patient she was attending to but later died.

According to hospital sources, Nurse Mildred Akinyi was breaking the news to the five relatives (one male and four females) when they pounced on her with kicks, blows and even hitting her with a blunt object leading to multiple injuries.

The nurse is now hospitalised in the casualty wing of the national referral hospital being treated for multiple internal injuries after the fracas. The assault happened on Saturday at 10am.

The patient was suffering from acute leukemia and was even visited by a pastor sent by the family the day before his death. The family seems not to be able to come to terms with death of the patient leading to the assault on the patient.

The national referral hospital is not well equipped to handle diseases like leukemia which needs more advanced treatment technologies.

According to sources within KNH, there was no exchange of words or quarel before the assault by relatives of the dead patient.

While we condemn the assault of medics, it’s funny that the same medics are complaining about this incident while they always plan to assault and mishandle patients at facilities countrywide. They should try to be human if they don’t want Kenyans to be angry with them.

Kenyan medics – nurses, medical doctors and clinical officers – are some of the most heartless and inconsiderate who leave patients to die unattended while chatting away or mishandling them while in hospital.

Anger by this family might be a serious reflection on what Kenyans thinks of the medics.

One of the relatives of those who assaulted the nurse is spending the weekend at Capital Hill police station as police prepare charges against her for the assault.
