Konsta Kapanen is a Finnish professional ice hockey player who plays as a left winger for KalPa Kuopio in Finland’s top-tier Liiga.

Born on September 29, 2003, in Kuopio, Finland (with some sources noting Voorhees, New Jersey, due to his family’s time in North America), he stands at approximately 5’9″ (174-175 cm) and weighs around 161 lbs (73 kg).

He shoots left and wears number 42 for KalPa.

As the youngest sibling in a renowned Finnish hockey family, Konsta has developed steadily through the KalPa organization, showcasing offensive upside, skating ability, and two-way potential while carving out his own path separate from his more established relatives.

Siblings

Konsta is the younger brother of NHL veteran Kasperi Kapanen.

He has two older sisters, Cassandra (born 1999) and Camilla (born 2001), who pursued gymnastics at the international level rather than hockey.

The family legacy runs deep: their father, Sami Kapanen, had a successful NHL career and later became involved in KalPa as both a player and owner; their grandfather, Hannu Kapanen, is a member of the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame; and they have an uncle and a cousin (Oliver Kapanen) who have also played professionally.

Career

Kapanen’s career has been centered in the KalPa system, where he progressed through the junior ranks before making his professional debut.

He spent time in Finland’s junior leagues and had brief stints on loan to other teams, including Tappara and Mestis clubs like IPK and HPK, for development.

He made his Liiga appearances gradually and became a more regular contributor in recent seasons.

In the 2024-25 season, he helped KalPa win the Liiga championship while recording modest numbers.

His breakout came in the 2025-26 campaign, where he played 60 regular-season games, tallying 16 goals and 21 assists for 37 points, along with strong playoff contributions (3 goals and 5 assists in 11 games).

He also appeared in the Champions Hockey League, adding further international club experience.

Although eligible for the 2022 NHL Entry Draft and ranked as a mid-round prospect by some scouting services, he went undrafted and has since focused on developing in Liiga, signing a contract extension with KalPa that runs through the 2025-26 season.

He has represented Finland at junior levels, including participation in the 2023 World Junior Championship pre-tournament and other U20 events, where he gained valuable experience against top international competition.

Accolades

In terms of accolades, Kapanen earned a Liiga championship medal with KalPa in 2024-25.

He has also collected silver at the U20 SM-sarja level earlier in his junior career.

While still building his resume at the senior professional level, his improved scoring output and consistent ice time in 2025-26 have marked him as an emerging offensive contributor in Finland’s premier league.
