Kenya Airways (KQ) has temporarily suspended its flights to and from Sudan over the coup that has seen President Omar al-Bashir ousted.

Speaking on state TV, defence minister Awad Ibn Ouf said the army would oversee a two-year transitional period followed by elections.

He also said a three-month state of emergency was being put in place.

However, the nation is still in a state of instability after protesters vowed to remain in the streets demanding a civilian council to lead the transition rather than a military one.

Mr Ibn Ouf said the country had been suffering from “poor management, corruption, and an absence of justice” and he apologised “for the killing and violence that took place”.

Al-bashir is also wanted by the international criminal court over crimes and genocide in connection with atrocities in west of Darfur.

Currently, he is under the custody of the army.

“I announce as minister of defence the toppling of the regime and detaining its chief in a secure place,” Mr Ibn Ouf said in a statement.

The protesters are also demanding for immediate investigations and release of all political detainees.
