Kisumu County government has put on hold the Ksh15 million Hippo Point project after an exposé by Kahawa Tungu’s investigative desk.

The Anyang’ Nyong’o-led county had set aside Ksh5 million to fence the Hippo Point which has been grabbed by Empire and sold to Grain Bulk at Ksh100 million.

Another Ksh5 million was set to be used for building a viewing point, erecting a jetty and constructing a swimming pool.

The remaining Ksh5 million was to be used to construct a restaurant. The sinister move was exposed by this desk, which sent the County government scampering to hide the shame. They have halted the plans, but this desk is yet to establish the progress of reclaiming the grabbed beach, which belongs to the public.

The controversy in the beach is what led to the removal of former governor Jack Ranguma, who refused to ratify grabbing of the facility by cartels.

If construction of the five-star hotel happened, it means that the beach, where most residents and tourists go to watch hippos and the sunset, would have been rendered inaccessible.
