A Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officer was arrested after allegedly shooting and injuring his girlfriend during a late-night incident in Seme Sub-county, Kisumu County.

Police said the incident occurred on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at about 10:50 p.m. at Bodi within the Ndere Island National Park area.

Police said the KWS warden attached to Ndere Island National Park, allegedly grabbed an AK-101 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of 5.56×45mm ammunition from his colleague, ranger who was on night shift duty at the camp.

The officer reportedly fired one round into the air before proceeding to the home of his girlfriend, a 19-year-old resident of Bodi.

He allegedly shot her in the stomach, with the bullet entering above the navel and exiting through her back.

The woman was rushed to Bodi Dispensary where she received first aid before being referred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she remains admitted in serious condition.

The suspect was disarmed by fellow officers and later handed over to police officers from Kombewa Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Seme.

Police visited and processed the scene, recovering the AK-101 rifle and a magazine containing 24 rounds of ammunition, which were secured as exhibits.

The officer is currently in custody as investigations continue, with the case being handled by DCI officers in Seme.

Police said they are investigating the matter.
