Learners across Kenya will lead the charge in planting thousands of fruit trees as the country marks Mazingira Day 2025, under the theme: “Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship.”

The Government, through a directive from Principal Secretary in the State Department for Environment and Climate Change Amb. Prof. Julius K. Bitok mobilized all Ministries, State Departments, and public institutions to take part in the countrywide tree planting exercise.

The spotlight this will be on fruit trees, with every public and private primary school expected to plant at least 2,000 trees.

Bitok emphasized the dual purpose of the campaign environmental conservation and improved school nutrition.

“By establishing fruit orchards in schools, we not only combat climate change but also enrich learners’ health and well-being through sustainable access to nutritious fruits,” he said.

He said this year, the emphasis will be on the planting of fruit trees.

“Both public and private primary schools have been identified as the main venues for the exercise with each school expected to plant a minimum of 2000 fruit trees.”

“The objective is to promote environmental conservation while enhancing school-based nutrition through the establishment/growth of fruit tree orchards in learning institutions,” he said.

A notable feature of this year’s Mazingira Day is the call for alumni involvement. Former students were encouraged to return and support tree planting efforts in their former schools, fostering long-term relationships and a spirit of giving back.

The October 10, 2025 exercise will be closely coordinated by local education and environment offices to ensure smooth execution.

Authorities were tasked with informing head teachers, mobilizing communities, and ensuring full participation in the half-day event.

The initiative forms part of Kenya’s broader commitment to environmental protection, sustainable agriculture, and the achievement of its national tree planting goals.

As trees take root across school grounds nationwide, Mazingira Day 2025 is set to be remembered not just as a celebration, but as a powerful step toward a greener, healthier, and more food-secure Kenya.
