The Law society of Kenya (LSK) has asked the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) sleuths to refrain from belittling or embarrassing corruption suspects during arrest.

Vice President LSK Harriette Chiggai noted that the organization fully supports the war against graft but the suspects should be treated in humane manner.

“The picking up of suspects late in the night, without giving them an opportunity to dress properly, and the harassment before their family members is not only traumatizing but also totally uncalled for,” she said in a statement on Monday.

“EACC should summon suspects and where there is resistance, arrest [them] and follow up. What is happening is a pure public relations exercise,” she added.

In the past two months high profile people have been arrested including former MD Kenya Power Ben Chumo, the suspended MD of the lighting company Dr Ken Tarus, former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and on Saturday NLC Chairman Mohamed Swazuri and MD Kenya Railways Atanas Maina.

Swazuri has been charged with conspiring to commit corruption which the prosecution claims led to the loss of public funds belonging to Kenya Railway Corporation in the sum of Ksh.222,375,000.

He has also been charged with five other counts of abuse of office and an alternative charge of breach of trust.

Mr Maina on the other hand is facing two counts of conspiracy to defraud and breach of trust.

The two alongside 12 others have however been released on bail and have been ordered to deposit their passports in court.
