LSK President Kanjama urges integrity after lawyers’ arrests over Alleged multi-million fraud

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Charles Kanjama called for greater accountability and integrity within the legal profession following the recent arrests of two advocates over separate allegations involving the misappropriation of client funds and a fake gold scam.

In a statement on Friday, Kanjama said the allegations had cast a shadow over the legal profession, even as he underscored the importance of respecting the presumption of innocence and allowing due process to take its course.

“The gravity of these allegations calls for serious introspection within the Bar,” Kanjama said.

The two lawyers are facing separate allegations involving the misappropriation of Sh49.4 million in client funds and participation in a Sh61.8 million fake gold scheme. The matters are before the courts.

Kanjama said trust remains the foundation of legal practice, noting that clients entrust advocates not only with their legal affairs but also with their livelihoods, expecting honesty, diligence and integrity.

He warned that allegations of financial misconduct by advocates have far-reaching consequences beyond the individuals involved.

“Where an advocate is accused of misappropriating client funds, the consequences extend far beyond the individual concerned. Such allegations undermine public confidence in the administration of justice and unfairly tarnish the reputation of the many advocates who serve with professionalism, dignity and honour,” he said.

The LSK president reminded advocates of the oath they take upon admission to the Bar, saying they are expected to uphold the Constitution, serve as officers of the court and maintain the highest ethical standards.

He reiterated that the Law Society of Kenya has zero tolerance for professional misconduct and remains committed to ensuring that the public receives quality legal services.

Kanjama urged advocates to embrace self-regulation by holding one another accountable and taking decisive action against unethical conduct within the profession.

“Honesty, accountability and integrity must remain the defining hallmarks of legal practice,” he said.

He called on members of the Bar to unite in safeguarding the profession’s reputation, reaffirming their commitment to the rule of law and restoring public confidence in the legal profession.

The statement comes amid heightened public scrutiny of professional ethics following the recent arrests, with the LSK seeking to reassure the public that the actions of a few individuals should not define the wider legal fraternity.
