Man Arrested as Police Seize Fake US Dollars in Nairobi

Police have arrested a man and recovered a large amount of fake US dollars in Nairobi following an intelligence-led operation.

In a statement on Monday, detectives from Lucky Summer Police Station said they intercepted a white Toyota Prado in the Lucky Summer area after receiving information that it was being used to transport counterfeit currency.

The driver, identified as 38-year-old Felix Nyegesa, was arrested at the scene.

During a search of the vehicle, officers found a locked metallic blue box hidden in the boot. Nyegesa allegedly refused to open the box, prompting police to escort him to the station for further investigation.

At the police station, the box was opened, revealing 68 bundles of counterfeit US dollar notes. Each bundle contained 100 fake dollar bills.

Police also recovered cartons, newspapers, cotton wool, sand and stones from inside the box, which they believe were used to conceal or package the fake currency.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said Nyegesa is currently being held in police custody as investigations continue to establish the full network behind the counterfeit money operation.

“Nyegesa is currently in police custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment as detectives dig deeper to unravel the full extent of the syndicate,” the DCI said.
