Man in custody after daughter dies in Mathare slums

A move by a father to discipline his daughter for allegedly spending two nights away from home turned tragic when the girl collapsed and died in Mathare slums, Nairobi.
The girl was a form two student at Athlete Senior Secondary School in Mathare North area. She died on Friday night hours after she had been assaulted by her father on claims she spent two nights away without the knowledge of the parents.
Neighbours said the father and his two sons were upset by the girl’s move and joined in the disciplining mission.
She escaped to a house belonging to her aunt where the group reportedly pursued her with more beatings.
The girl collapsed and died prompting the group to escape the scene. Police said the father aged 43 was arrested from a house in the area and detained pending other procedures including prosecution with murder.
The body of the girl was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other processes.
Such punishment is banned both in schools and homes. Police warn against such punishment following a surge in tragedies surrounding the same mode.
Meanwhile, police in Muthangari, Nairobi are investigating an incident where a human skeleton was found in a septic tank at a residential home.
Workers who were emptying the septic stumbled on the skeleton believed to be of a woman. Police said there was also a skirt, bra, inner wear, white blouse and a petticoat in the tank.
It is believed the woman was killed and the body stuffed therein.
Police were called to the scene and moved the body to the mortuary pending other procedures.
Police said they are investigating the incident and want those whose female relatives are missing to report to the station to report for further probe.
The owner of the house was questioned as part of the probe into the incident.
