Man killed by flying stone after mining blast in Moyale

A 30-year-old man was killed in Moyale, Marsabit County, after a stone reportedly hurled from a mining site by an explosive blast struck him on the head.

The incident occurred on Monday morning in Nasore area, Dabel Location, within Moyale Sub-County.

Police said Hassan Abdi Guyo, a Gabra man, was sleeping inside his makeshift nylon-walled house at about 7.30 am when a stone hit him on the head.

He died instantly.

According to preliminary police investigations, the stone was propelled from a mining site about 200 metres away after a mining explosive detonated.

The impact left the victim with a deep visible injury to the head.

Police officers rushed to the scene and commenced investigations.

Police have identified a suspect in connection with the incident. He was reported to be on the run as investigators sought to establish the circumstances surrounding the blast and the events leading to Guyo’s death.

The scene was processed and the necessary investigations commenced before the body was removed to Moyale Sub-County Hospital mortuary.

A postmortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause of death and provide further information on the injuries sustained.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.

And a 37-year-old man drowned in Silungai Stream in Matete Sub-County, Kakamega County, after he reportedly slipped and fell from a footbridge.

The deceased, identified as Ayub Kakai, was found in the stream after the incident, which was reported to police on Monday morning.

Officers who visited the scene found the body in the water and established that the deceased had apparently slipped while crossing the footbridge before falling into the stream.

The body was retrieved from the water and moved to St Martha Chimoi Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning, with the autopsy expected to establish the exact cause of death.

Meanwhile, police in Rachuonyo East, Homa Bay County, have launched investigations into the death of a 38-year-old man whose body was found at Ringa Trading Centre on Monday morning.

The body of Geoffrey Aroko Ayieko, was discovered lying on his back near a boda boda shade at the trading centre at about 8am.

A passerby alerted police after spotting the body.

Police said the deceased had multiple fractures and bruises on his body, although no visible open wound was detected.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Ayieko had previously worked as a farmhand for a retired teacher in the Ringa area before his services were discontinued.

Police said the deceased had reportedly experienced mental health challenges.

He was allegedly last seen on the road at about 2am on Monday, several hours before his body was discovered.

The circumstances leading to his death remain unclear, with investigators treating the incident as a suspected murder as they seek to establish where, when and how the injuries were inflicted.

After processing the scene, detectives moved the body to Marani Sub-County Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

Police are expected to rely on the autopsy findings, forensic examination and statements from witnesses to establish the cause and circumstances of Ayieko’s death.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
