A man was shot in the right knee after confronting a suspected herdsman over livestock grazing on planted farms in Mworomatoo area, Mutuati Sub-County, Meru County.

The victim was reportedly shot after questioning the herdsman and asking him to remove the animals from the cultivated land.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the identity and whereabouts of the suspected assailant, were not immediately established.

The assailant escaped the scene later on, police said of the Sunday incident,

The incident highlights tensions that can arise between farmers and livestock keepers over animals straying into cultivated land, resulting in disputes over crop destruction and access to grazing areas.

Police are expected to establish the full circumstances of the shooting.

Elsewhere, an 18-year-old herder was injured in a four-hour gunfight between Turkana herders and suspected armed Gabra bandits in Dakaiye area of Loiyangalani Sub-County, Marsabit County.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 11, 2026, after a group of herders pursued three camels that had strayed the previous day.

According to police, the herders had recovered six of the nine missing camels from the Kino area before they were ambushed by an unknown number of suspected armed bandits while searching for the remaining animals.

During the confrontation, a herder aged 18, was shot in the left hip, with the bullet reportedly exiting through his genital area and right thigh.

He also sustained another gunshot wound on the left side of his rib cage, with the possibility that the bullet remained lodged in his body.

The herders reportedly engaged the attackers in an exchange of gunfire that lasted approximately four hours.

A security teams navigated the difficult terrain and managed to rescue the injured herder, who was found in stable condition.

He was taken to Loiy-Care Medical Clinic for first aid as arrangements were made to refer him to Marsabit County Hospital for further treatment.

The area remained tense following the confrontation, according to the police report.

The incident underscores persistent security challenges in parts of Marsabit County, where livestock theft and armed confrontations have contributed to tensions between pastoralist communities.

The area is among those under a special operation to address cattle rustling menace.
