A 36-year-old man died after allegedly being assaulted by residents in Mihang’o, Nairobi, in what police are investigating as a suspected case of mob justice.
The deceased, identified as Joshua Mutungi, reportedly visited a friend at Paris Apartments within the Mihang’o SDA area in the early hours of Friday, March 20, at around 4:00 a.m.
According to police, his friend was not at home at the time.
Neighbours, reportedly alarmed by the persistent knocking at the door, became suspicious and confronted Mutungi.
In the ensuing altercation, he sustained serious injuries.
He was later assisted by his friend who rushed him to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for emergency treatment.
Due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.
Police say Mutungi succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, March 25 while undergoing treatment.
His body has since been moved to the hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Authorities have launched investigations into the incident, with officers seeking to identify and apprehend those involved in the assault.
The case adds to growing concerns over rising incidents of mob justice in residential areas, with police urging members of the public to report suspicious activities to authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands.
Elsewhere, police in Kitui are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an unidentified man whose body was discovered at Kalundu Market on Wednesday morning.
According to police, the incident was reported at around 8:45 a.m. after the body was spotted lying on the veranda of a building within the busy market area.
Police who visited the scene described the deceased as a short, young man believed to be approximately 27 years old. The body was found in an emaciated state, raising concerns about his health condition prior to death.
Police further noted that the man had no identification documents on him. However, fresh miraa (muguka) leaves were recovered from his blue jacket, suggesting he may have been chewing the stimulant shortly before his death.
The body was moved to Kitui County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.
Authorities have launched investigations and are appealing to members of the public who may have information that could help identify the deceased to come forward.
