Police in Kibwezi Sub-County, Makueni County, have launched investigations after the body of an unidentified man was discovered submerged in a water well under suspicious circumstances.
The grim discovery was made on Saturday morning after a herder noticed blood stains while grazing goats in the Mtito Andei area.
According to police, the herder followed the trail of blood to a nearby water well, where he spotted a pink-and-black nylon canvas sheet and a car mat floating inside. He alerted members of the public, who subsequently reported the matter to authorities.
Preliminary investigations involved pumping water out of the well, leading to the discovery of a human body submerged beneath the surface. The deceased, believed to be a male adult aged about 40 years, had both his hands and legs tied.
Police said the body also bore multiple head injuries, suggesting the victim may have been assaulted before being dumped in the well.
Members of the public assisted officers in retrieving the body, which was later documented and removed to Kambu Sub-County Hospital Mortuary awaiting identification and a post-mortem examination.
Detectives have opened a murder investigation and are working to establish the identity of the deceased as well as the circumstances surrounding his death. The motive was not known.

According to a report made at Ndavaya Police Station at about 10 a.m., the elderly man is believed to have been attacked while asleep at an unknown time during the night or early morning.
Police officers visited the scene and found the victim’s body lying on a mat on the floor of the house, which reportedly had no lockable door.
Preliminary examination revealed that the deceased had sustained a severe stab wound to the left side of the abdomen. Investigators documented the scene and launched inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
A 52-year-old man was arrested to assist with investigations. Family members told police that the suspect had been involved in a long-standing land dispute with the deceased.
