María Pilar León Cebrián, widely known as Mapi León, is a Spanish professional footballer born on 13 June 1995 in Zaragoza, Spain.
She stands approximately 1.69 metres tall and primarily plays as a centre-back, though she has also featured as a left-back.
Raised in the La Almozara district of Zaragoza by her parents Javier, a mechanic, and Pilar, she developed a passion for sport from a young age.
She initially tried volleyball at age seven, along with other activities such as baseball and futsal. She later turned down an art-school scholarship to focus on football.
A club official spotted her and her brother playing with a ball in a supermarket while their parents shopped, leading to her joining the youth setup of her hometown club.
Openly lesbian and an advocate within the LGBTQ+ community, she has spoken publicly about her orientation since 2018.
Beyond football, she is known for her interest in motorcycles, inherited from her father, as well as drawing and tattoos, some of which she has designed or applied herself.
Siblings
Mapi has one older brother, named Javi León. He maintains a low public profile, and little detailed information about his personal or professional life is available.
The siblings grew up together in Zaragoza, and early accounts of her discovery as a footballer often mention the two of them playing with a ball in a supermarket when a Zaragoza CFF scout noticed them.
Her brother also played football or tried futsal in their youth, though he did not pursue a professional path in the same way.
Career
León began her senior career with Prainsa Zaragoza, later Zaragoza CFF, making her Primera División debut at age 16 around 2011 after progressing through the club’s ranks from about age 11.

She moved to RCD Espanyol for the 2013–14 season, then joined Atlético Madrid in 2014.
At Atlético, she transitioned fully into a centre-back role under coach Ángel Villacampa and contributed to the club’s first league title and a Copa de la Reina success.
In August 2017, she transferred to FC Barcelona for a reported €50,000 fee, marking the first paid transfer between Spanish women’s clubs.
She spent nine seasons at Barcelona, becoming a cornerstone of the side’s dominant era with consistent starts, strong defensive reading of the game, progressive passing and set-piece contributions.
She amassed hundreds of appearances and scored multiple goals from defence.
After leaving Barcelona in 2026, she signed for London City Lionesses in the Women’s Super League, seeking a new challenge in a different style of play.
Internationally, she debuted for Spain in September 2016 and has represented the national team in major tournaments including the FIFA Women’s World Cup and UEFA Women’s Euro.
She stepped away from the national team for a period amid concerns over conditions before returning for the 2025 Nations League Finals.
Accolades
With Atlético Madrid, she won the Primera División in 2016–17 and the Copa de la Reina in 2016.
At Barcelona, her major club honours include multiple Liga F titles, with reports citing six or seven across her tenure.
She also won several Copas de la Reina, around five to seven, as well as multiple Supercopa de España trophies.
She won three or four UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, including the 2021 edition, with further successes in subsequent years.
She was part of the first Spanish women’s side to complete a continental treble.
Individual recognition includes selection for the FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11, UEFA Women’s Champions League Squad of the Season on more than one occasion, Primera División Best XI honours and other seasonal awards.
With Spain, she has collected the Algarve Cup and contributed to Nations League success.
