    Marianne St-Gelais is a retired Canadian short track speed skater, widely recognized as one of the country’s most accomplished athletes in the sport.

    Born on February 17, 1990, in Roberval, Quebec, she hails from Saint-Félicien, Quebec, where she grew up in a family deeply connected to nature and sports.

    St-Gelais began speed skating at the age of 10 after a neighbor, who led the local club, invited her and her siblings to join to help boost membership.

    Known for her strength in the 500m distance and her contributions to relay teams, she became a fan favorite and a prominent figure in Canadian winter sports.

    Marianne grew up as one of five siblings in her family.

    She has an older sister named Marjorie and a younger sister named Catherine, both of whom have been mentioned in connection with her family dynamics and supportive environment.

    Catherine, who was notably younger during Marianne’s earlier career years, pursued competitive skating alongside a brother named Bastien, who was also involved in the sport at a younger age.

    Career

    St-Gelais rose through the ranks as a junior skater, achieving significant success that included setting world records and dominating at events like the 2007 Canada Winter Games, where she secured four gold medals and one silver.

    She transitioned to senior competition around 2009-2010, quickly establishing herself as a top contender.

    Her breakthrough came at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, where she captured silver in the 500m, on her 20th birthday, and another silver in the 3,000m relay.

    She continued to excel in World Cup competitions, winning the overall 500m World Cup title in 2010-11 after dominating multiple races.

    At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, she added a third Olympic silver as part of the 3,000m relay team.

    Her final Olympic appearance was at the 2018 PyeongChang Games.

    Throughout her career, she earned numerous World Cup medals, broke a Canadian record in the 500m, and was recognized multiple times as Speed Skating Canada’s female short track athlete of the year.

    Accolades

    Marianne is a three-time Olympic silver medalist, earning her medals in the 500m and 3,000m relay at Vancouver 2010, and in the 3,000m relay at Sochi 2014.

    She secured a bronze medal in the 500m at the 2010 World Championships and claimed the overall World Cup title in the 500m for the 2010-11 season.

    As a junior, she won gold in the 500m at the World Junior Championships in 2009 and was named Speed Skating Canada’s Rising Star.
