Mark Kirk is a retired American politician and attorney best known for his service as a Republican United States Senator from Illinois.
Born on September 15, 1959, in Champaign, Illinois, he represented the state in the U.S. Senate from 2010 to 2017 after previously serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois’s 10th congressional district from 2001 to 2010.
Kirk built a reputation as a moderate Republican with expertise in foreign policy, national security, and intelligence matters, drawing from his extensive military background as a U.S. Navy Reserve intelligence officer.

Mark has several siblings, namely Gretchen Miller, Maya Kirk, Kyra Miller, Robin Kirk, Eric Miller, Melissa Hutchison, and Kristen Miller.
He was born to parents Judith Ann (Brady) Kirk and Francis Gabriel “Frank” Kirk.
His mother passed away in 2020, and his father died earlier in 2008.
Career
Kirk’s career spanned military service, law, and elected office.
He graduated cum laude from Cornell University with a B.A. in history, earned a master’s degree from the London School of Economics, and obtained a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.

Kirk served in the U.S. Navy Reserve for over two decades, including deployments and intelligence roles that took him to hotspots such as Haiti, the Balkans, and Iraq.

He won a special election to the Senate in 2010 to fill the remainder of Barack Obama’s unexpired term before winning a full term later that year.
As a senator, Kirk was known for bipartisan efforts on topics including sanctions against Iran, support for Israel, and disability rights following his own recovery from a major stroke in 2012.
He lost re-election in 2016 and has since worked in private sectors, including consulting and advisory roles related to global affairs.

His military honors include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Services Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
In his civilian career, he was honored with awards such as the Senate Legislator of the Year Award from the Disabled American Veterans in 2016 and the Lincoln Award for Leadership from the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.
