Markus Söder Siblings: Getting to Know Heike Söder

Markus Söder PHOTO/Stern

Markus Thomas Theodor Söder is a German politician born on 5 January 1967 in Nuremberg, Bavaria.

He serves as Minister-President of Bavaria, a position he has held since March 2018, and as chairman of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) since January 2019.

Raised in a conservative Protestant family in the Nuremberg district of Schweinau, he is the son of Max Söder, a master bricklayer who ran a small construction business with his wife Renate, a trained bank clerk.

Söder grew up in a traditional, hardworking household and later studied law at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, completed military service, earned a doctorate in law, and briefly worked as a journalist and editor at Bayerischer Rundfunk before entering full-time politics.

Siblings

Markus has one sibling, a younger sister named Heike.

Family photographs from the mid-1970s show the two children together with their parents, Max and Renate Söder.

However, public information about Heike remains limited, as Söder has generally kept details of his immediate family private.

Career

Söder joined the CSU and its youth organization, the Junge Union, in 1983.

He entered the Bavarian state parliament (Landtag) in 1994 and has remained a member since.

He chaired the Bavarian Junge Union from 1995 to 2003 and served as CSU secretary-general from 2003 to 2007.

In the Bavarian state government he held successive ministerial posts: State Minister for Federal and European Affairs (2007–2008), State Minister for the Environment and Health (2008–2011), State Minister of Finance (2011–2013), and State Minister of Finance, Regional Development and Homeland (2013–2018).

He became Minister-President of Bavaria on 16 March 2018, succeeding Horst Seehofer, and was re-elected in subsequent terms, including after the 2023 state election.

In January 2019 he was elected chairman of the CSU, consolidating leadership of both the state government and the party.

Throughout his career he has been noted for a pragmatic, media-savvy style and a focus on Bavarian interests within German federal politics.

Accolades

Söder’s primary recognition stems from his successive rises within Bavarian and CSU structures rather than a long list of formal external awards.

He received a scholarship from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation during his studies.

His election as Minister-President and later as CSU chairman represent the highest political honors within his party and state.

He has been reconfirmed in office by the Bavarian Landtag and has maintained strong electoral support in his Nuremberg constituency.
