Matatus On Strike Risk Losing Licenses – CS Matiang’i

Matatus that stayed off the roads on Monday risk losing their licenses, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has said.

Speaking in Likoni, the bullish CS maintained that the government was not letting up on the nationwide crackdown on traffic violation.

“The operators who have decided to withdraw their vehicles from the road can keep them home as long as they want because we are not changing our position,” he said.

Matiang’i also insisted that the crackdown will not be a one or two day affair, but will stay so as to bring order back into the lives of the people.

“None of us would like to lose their relatives on the road; none of us would like to invest in a business where there are no returns. We are doing this because all of us must agree. Let us now go back to order,” he added.

The Federation of Public Transport Operators did however advise their members to withdraw services terming the set guidelines as “discriminatory.”

As a result, thousands of commuters have been forced to walk to their destinations as operational matatus double their prices.

The government has in the meantime instructed Kenya Railways to increase the number of commuter trains and reduce the fares by 10 per cent.

“Therefore to ensure the public will be able to continue with their day to day activities in nation building, Kenya Railways Corporation is hereby directed to increase the number and frequency of commuter trains on all routes and also reduce the fare by 10% until the normal public transport services resume,” Transport CS James Macharia said.
