Matiang’i Set to Make First Public Appearance Since Political Hiatus

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Okeng’o Matiang’i is set to make his first public appearance in over a year, marking a highly anticipated return to the public stage on Friday, May 2, 2025, in the Gusii region.

According to a statement released on April 30 by the Team Matiang’i Secretariat, the event will feature a series of meet-the-people tours and official courtesy visits across key locations in Kisii and Nyamira Counties, including Kijauri, Keroka, Keumbu, Kisii Town, and Nyamira.

Dr Matiang’i will be joined by prominent elected leaders from the Gusii community, among them Governors Simba Arati (Kisii) and Amos Nyaribo (Nyamira), Senators Momoioma Onyoka and Okong’o Omogeni, and several Members of Parliament and County Assembly members.

The tour is intended to re-establish direct engagement with the grassroots and reaffirm Dr. Matiang’i’s continued commitment to public service and regional development.

Dr Matiang’i, a once-dominant figure in Kenya’s previous administration, has maintained a low profile since the 2022 General Election and the subsequent political transition. Speculation about his next political move has persisted, particularly among his supporters in the Gusii region who have expressed hope for his return to national leadership.

His re-emergence comes at a time when political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections are beginning to take shape. Observers believe this tour could be the first step toward a larger political comeback, especially with the vocal backing of grassroots leaders.
