Mats Henrik Berne Wieffer is a Dutch professional footballer born on 16 November 1999 in Borne, in the Twente region of the Netherlands.

He primarily operates as a defensive midfielder or right-back and is known for his physical presence, tactical intelligence, ball-winning ability, and composure on the ball.

Wieffer currently plays for Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion and represents the Netherlands national team.

Siblings

Mats is the middle child of three siblings.

He has an older brother named Rens and a younger sister named Bente, with roughly two years separating each of them.

Rens, who played football for a long time himself as a tough defender, helped toughen Mats up through intense one-on-one sessions on a local pitch near their family home in Borne; their parents sometimes had to intervene when the play got too physical.

Rens later assisted Mats by helping compile highlight videos that aided his move away from Twente during the pandemic period when opportunities were limited.

Bente has been involved in volleyball, competing at a competitive amateur level.

Career

Wieffer began playing at local club RKSV NEO before joining the FC Twente academy around age 10.

He made limited first-team appearances for Twente, including a cup debut in 2018 and a league outing in the Eerste Divisie, as the club earned promotion, but opportunities remained scarce.

In 2020 he moved to Excelsior, where he established himself over two seasons with regular appearances, goals, and strong performances that earned him recognition as a key player and helped the club secure promotion via the play-offs.

In 2022 he joined Feyenoord, initially as a relatively low-profile signing.

Under Arne Slot he broke through dramatically, becoming a regular starter, contributing goals and assists, and featuring in European competitions including the Champions League.

After two successful seasons he transferred to Brighton & Hove Albion in July 2024 for a substantial fee reported around €30 million, signing a long-term contract.

At Brighton he has continued to feature regularly in the Premier League while earning consistent call-ups to the Netherlands side, for whom he debuted in 2023 and has accumulated multiple caps with at least one international goal.

Accolades

With Feyenoord, Wieffer was part of the squad that won the Eredivisie title in the 2022–23 season and the KNVB Cup in 2023–24.

He earned individual recognition including Feyenoord Player of the Month awards and selections in the Eredivisie Team of the Month.

Earlier, during his Twente period the club claimed the Eerste Divisie title, though his involvement was limited.

At Excelsior he was named the club’s Player of the Year after a strong debut campaign.

On the international stage he has represented the Netherlands at senior level, including selection for major tournament considerations.
