Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has promised to push for speedy completion of Mau Mua roads linking several counties in Mt Kenya region.
He said the roads remain top of government’s priorities saying funds have been allocated for the projects to be completed in under a year to ease movement and catalyse the region’s economy.
“Most of the roads are at 65 percent completion. The remaining sections are going to be completed in the next one year under this administration,” DP stated.
Speaking on Thursday when he inspected ongoing development projects in Nyeri County, including a section of the Mau Mau roads, Prof. Kindiki said he is closely monitoring their progress to avert any delays.
“The roads will improve accessibility for trade and support the transportation of cash crops such as tea, coffee and milk helping farmers to easily get access to markets on time,” he added.
Among the Mau Mau roads he inspected are Ihururu Junction-Kanjora-Dedan Kimathi University-Maigayuini and Ihururu Junction-Njoguini-Kahigaini Roads in Tetu Constituency.
The DP also checked the progress of Ruringu Stadium and Nyeri Modern Market both in the neighbouring Nyeri Town Constituency.
In Tetu, the government is accelerating completion of 133 kilometres of Mau Mau roads— which is the highest number among the projects— in honour of the country’s freedom fighter, Dedan Kimathi.
“Tetu is one of the constituencies in this part of Mount Kenya with the highest number of kilometres of Mau Mau Roads. This is because Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi wa Waciuri was a son of this place,” he noted.
In Nyeri County, in total, the administration is constructing 775 kilometres of roads at a cost of Sh45 billion that is a part of the nationwide programme aimed at opening up the country for economic transformation.
The expansion of the highway from Sagana-Karatina-Marua has been completed with plans at advanced stages to ensure the section to Nyeri town is finished.
The Kwa Power-Muruguru Girls-Kengen Road in Nyeri Town has also been allocated 163 million shillings and is ongoing.
The Deputy President challenged the contractors to stick to the completion schedules warning against laxity and shoddy work.
“This is the time to build Kenya afresh; kilometre by kilometre, inch by inch, until we make Kenya a modern country,” he explained.
“I will make sure development is at top speed here in Nyeri, in Mt Kenya and the whole country,” he promised.
Two phases of Affordable housing projects at Blue Valley estate are ongoing with Phase 1 allocated Sh877 million for 361 units and Phase 2 at Sh1.5 billion for 468 units.
A Tuition Block is also underway at the Nyeri Technical Institute at Sh20 million .
Ruring’u Stadium has been revived and is being speeded up after it was allocated Sh800 million.
Additionally, electricity connection projects are ongoing with an extra 12, 000 homes targeted at-Sh650 million.
Coffee, tea and milk farmers have also benefitted from reforms that have led to higher earnings.
The DP, while engaging Nyeri Town residents, said President Ruto and the government will be ready to present their development scorecard ahead of the next elections telling the opponents to be ready with theirs.
“We will come and present our development record. Our opponents should do the same. Before they insult us or assign us names, they should tell you what they did when they were in power,” DP informed the residents.
As the region’s spokesperson following endorsement by elders from Kikuyu, Embu, Mbeere and Meru, Prof. Kindiki urged leaders to focus on what is important to the people instead of retrogressive politics.
“I am focused on doing my work and I will bring all our communities together. We have always been united. I will not let you down. I will not be sucked into the low league of insults and childish behaviours,” he emphasized.
The DP was joined by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, MPs Duncan Mathenge (Nyeri Town), Eric Wamumbi (Mathira) and Njoroge Wainaina (Kieni). Also in attendance was Gender and Affirmative Action Principal Secretary Anne Wang’ombe.
