Mellow Man Ace is a pioneering Cuban-American rapper whose real name is Ulpiano Sergio Reyes.
Born on April 12, 1967, in Cuba, he relocated to the United States with his family at the age of four, eventually settling in South Gate, California.
He is widely recognized for his bilingual style, blending English and Spanish in his lyrics, which helped popularize Spanglish in hip-hop.
Often called the Godfather of Latin Rap, he was among the first to bring Latino influences prominently into mainstream hip-hop, paving the way for future artists.
He was also a founding member of the influential group Cypress Hill before pursuing his solo path.

Career
Mellow Man Ace’s career began in the late 1980s when he released early singles and became involved in the burgeoning West Coast hip-hop scene.

He was part of the initial lineup that formed Cypress Hill alongside Sen Dog and others, though he departed to focus on his solo endeavors.
His breakthrough came with the 1989 debut album Escape from Havana, released on Capitol Records, which featured production from notable figures like the Dust Brothers and Def Jef.
The album’s lead single, “Mentirosa,” became a major hit in 1990, peaking at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and blending catchy hooks with bilingual rhymes over samples from Santana tracks.
This marked one of the earliest mainstream successes for Spanglish rap.
He followed up with The Brother with Two Tongues in 1992, which continued his novelty and bilingual approach but did not achieve the same commercial peak.
After a period of relative quiet, he returned with albums such as From the Darkness into the Light in 2000, Vengo a Cobrar in 2004, and later projects including collaborations with Sen Dog on the 2006 album Ghetto Therapy.
He also participated in the Latin Alliance project and released singles like “South Gate” in 2018.
