A section of prison warders were left homeless after a fire burnt down their houses in Meru Main Prisons.

The fire started from one of the affected houses before spreading faster to others. Authorities said six semi-permanent structures were burnt down. The fire broke out on Tuesday January 6 at night.

The warders whose houses were affected said they lost property of unknown value.

Prison officers at the scene managed to contain the fire preventing it from spreading to other houses.

Police were informed of the incident and visited the scene and announced they had involved experts to join in the probe.

Those whose houses were affected sought refuge elsewhere within the prisons.

Security was heightened as the personnel fought to contain the spread of the fire.

Police said no injuries were reported in the incident.

Meanwhile, property of unknown value was destroyed when a fire broke out at an electronic gadget store along Luthuli Avenue, Nairobi.

The fire which broke out on Tuesday evening spread from store to others burning down mobile phones, television sets, laptops and fridges.

Fire fighters struggled overnight to contain the fire. This forced authorities to switch off power connection to the area. This also prompted thieves to invade some shops that were not affected by the fire and steal. Police had to be called late in the night to mount an operation in the area and chase the thieves.

The police also blocked larger part of Luthuli Avenue on Wednesday to stop looting that had started.

This gave room to some owners of the shops there to evacuate the gadgets.

Fire fighters were still at the scene on Wednesday as more smoke was seen pillowing from the affected stores.

Police said they are investigating the cause of the fire.

In Kisii Town, a fire razed down two shops. No injuries were reported, police said.

Police said they are investigating the incident.
