Met Department Forecasts Rainfall Across Most Parts of Kenya
Most parts of Kenya are expected to receive rainfall over the next seven days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met).
The weather forecast covering September 15 to 21, 2026, indicates that several counties will experience rainfall during the period as the country prepares for the October-November-December (OND) rainfall season.
Rainfall is expected in parts of Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Embu, Garissa, Homa Bay, Kajiado, Kakamega, Kericho, Kiambu, Kilifi, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kisumu, Kitui, Kwale, Laikipia, Lamu, Machakos, Makueni, Mandera, Marsabit, Meru, Migori, Mombasa, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Siaya, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Tharaka-Nithi, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga, Wajir and West Pokot.
Kenya Met said sunny intervals are expected in parts of Isiolo, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana and Wajir during the forecast period.
The department urged Kenyans to use available weather information to prepare for potential weather-related hazards ahead of the OND season.
“As we prepare for the OND season, the window for preparedness is now,” Kenya Met said.
“Use weather information to plan ahead, protect lives and livelihoods, and take action before hazards occur,” the department added.
Kenya Met said daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are expected in several counties.
The affected areas include Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit and Turkana.
Residents in these areas are likely to experience relatively hot conditions during the day, with temperatures remaining above the 30°C mark.
At night, however, temperatures are expected to fall below 10°C in some parts of Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nakuru, Narok, Taita Taveta and Kajiado counties.
Residents in these areas have been advised to take note of the significant differences between daytime and night-time temperatures.
The latest forecast comes after most parts of the country experienced dry conditions between September 7 and 13, 2026.
According to Kenya Met, rainfall was recorded in only a few counties, with Busia, Kisii, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale recording notable rainfall during the period.
The highest seven-day rainfall total of 120.7mm was recorded at the Busia Ministry of Water Office rainfall station.
Mtwapa Meteorological Station recorded the highest rainfall amount over a 24-hour period, receiving 77.1mm on September 11, 2026.
Kenya Met noted that rainfall amounts increased at most stations that received rainfall when the September 7-13 period was compared with the August 31-September 6 period.
Mandera Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature during the week.
The station recorded 38.5°C on September 11, 2026.
Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature at 5.8°C on September 12.
The two stations also recorded the highest seven-day average maximum temperature and lowest seven-day average minimum temperature respectively.
Mandera recorded a seven-day average maximum temperature of 37.1°C, while Nyahururu recorded a seven-day average minimum temperature of 6.6°C.
Kenya Met said daytime temperatures generally decreased across the country when the August 31-September 6 period was compared with September 7-13.
However, a few stations recorded slight increases in daytime temperatures, including Wajir, Voi and Lodwar.
Night-time temperatures, on the other hand, increased in most parts of the country during the same period.
Some stations recorded marginal decreases in minimum temperatures, including Suba, Kisumu and Kisii.
