Meta, This Is Digital to Award $10,000 to Kenyan AI Startups at Inaugural Pitchathon

Meta, in partnership with Nairobi-based AI accelerator This Is Digital, will host the inaugural AI Academy Kenya Pitchathon on Friday, October 16, 2026, bringing together 10 early-stage startups and developers developing artificial intelligence solutions for real-world challenges across Africa.

The event, scheduled to take place at The Social House in Lavington, Nairobi, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will officially launch Meta’s strategic partnership with This Is Digital.

The initiative aims to showcase homegrown innovations built using Meta’s AI technologies, with finalists presenting solutions across healthcare, education, retail, legal services and financial compliance.

Three of the finalists are developing solutions in healthcare and health technology. Neural Labs Africa is presenting NeuralSight, a tele-radiology and AI diagnostic reporting platform, while Solivia Data is showcasing AfyaEdge, which provides solar-powered offline triage hubs. O.C.A. is developing software for auditing insurance claims and supporting compliance with Social Health Authority (SHA) requirements.

In education and assistive technology, Jackfruit Network is offering data-driven advisory services for low-fee private schools. Utter Africa is developing a Kiswahili-first augmentative and alternative communication platform for nonverbal children with autism spectrum disorder, while Me-Nasoma uses text-to-speech technology to convert content into local Kenyan languages.

TemboTrade and JuaFlow represent the retail and commerce operations sector. TemboTrade is building a unified AI commerce and enterprise resource planning platform for small and medium-sized enterprises, while JuaFlow connects customer communications with business ERP and customer relationship management systems through workflow automation.

HakiChain is presenting an AI-powered legal suite tailored to African law, while Sawazisha AI, developed by John Digital Solutions, uses WhatsApp-based automation to support tax compliance by matching transactions with electronic tax invoices issued through the electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS).

The competition will feature two pitching rounds judged by a panel of leaders from the technology industry, government and academia.

The judging panel includes Chinny Francis, Policy Programs Manager for AI and Wearables at Meta; Gregory Wanjama, Co-Founder and CEO of This Is Digital; Isaac Hunja, Founder and CEO of Kaara Works; Evan Gichuki, Director of Digital Products and Services at the State Department of ICT; and Nathasha Nalyaka, a data scientist and lecturer at Strathmore University’s iLab Africa.

The two winning teams will each receive $5,000 in equity-free funding and Meta advertising credits to support the growth of their solutions.

They will also receive invitations to pitch their innovations at Meta’s Regional AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, scheduled for November 24, 2026.

The pitchathon will feature keynote addresses and presentations from Sarah Muyonga, Meta’s Public Policy Manager for East and Horn of Africa; Evan Gichuki of the State Department of ICT; Grace Murugi, Co-Founder and Chief AI and Digital Strategist at This Is Digital; and Chinny Francis of Meta.

Through the partnership, Meta and This Is Digital are seeking to spotlight Kenyan developers building practical AI applications while creating opportunities for promising startups to accelerate their growth and reach broader markets.

This Is Digital works with global technology leaders and regional enterprises to advance AI strategy, policy development, adoption and innovation across Africa.

The event marks a platform for Kenyan innovators to demonstrate how locally developed AI solutions can address challenges in essential services, business operations and regulatory compliance.
