Mike D is an American rapper, musician, songwriter, and music producer, best known as a founding member of the influential hip-hop group Beastie Boys.

Born Michael Louis Diamond on November 20, 1965, in New York City, he grew up in an upper-middle-class Jewish family immersed in the art world.

His father, Harold Diamond, was a prominent art dealer, and his mother, Hester Diamond (née Klein), was an acclaimed interior designer and world-class art collector who amassed an impressive collection of contemporary art.

    Siblings

Mike D has two brothers, an older brother named David and a younger brother named Stephen, who tragically passed away from neuroendocrine cancer in 1999.

Hester Diamond, who lived until 2020 at age 91, was remembered for her adventurous spirit and influential role in collecting and design, traits that influenced Mike D’s own eclectic interests.

While his brothers did not pursue public careers in entertainment like Mike D, the family maintained close ties.

    Career

Mike D’s career began in the early 1980s when he co-founded the Beastie Boys in New York City, initially as a punk rock band that included future members Adam “MCA” Yauch and later Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz.

The group transitioned to hip-hop, releasing their breakthrough album Licensed to Ill in 1986, which became a massive commercial success and the first rap album to top the Billboard 200 chart.

Over the decades, Mike D contributed vocals, drums (in early years), and production to the band’s evolving sound, blending punk energy with innovative sampling and lyrics.

The Beastie Boys released critically acclaimed albums such as Paul’s Boutique (1989), Check Your Head (1992), Ill Communication (1994), and Hello Nasty (1998), establishing themselves as pioneers who pushed hip-hop boundaries.

Following the death of MCA in 2012, the group ceased active touring and recording, but Mike D and Ad-Rock continued to honor their legacy through projects like the 2020 documentary Beastie Boys Story and Mike D’s own ventures in music production, philanthropy, and lifestyle pursuits, including his passion for surfing and wellness.

    Accolades

Mike D’s accolades are largely tied to his work with the Beastie Boys, which earned the group significant recognition in music history.

The band received multiple Grammy Awards, including wins for Best Alternative Music Album and other categories, along with numerous nominations.

They were honored with the MTV Video Vanguard Award for lifetime achievement and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Their albums achieved multi-platinum status, with over 40 million records sold worldwide, and they secured several number-one albums on the Billboard charts.
