The decomposed body of a woman who had been missing was found in a bush in Ithekahuno, Gichira, Tetu, Nyeri County.
The body was decomposed when it was discovered on February 12, 2026, police said.
The discovery led to the arrest of a suspect in the Mathira area, police said.
The suspect had earlier tried to lie that two police officers had tasked him to assassinate the area Member of Parliament Erick Wamumbi.
He informed the MP of the said plan prompting an identification parade at Karatina police station where he pinpointed the two officers as those who had tasked him to trail and assassinate the MP.
This prompted a probe which revealed a chief had informed the MP the suspect had informed him of the said claims.
On February 13, 2026, a team of senior police officers from Central region and Nyeri County conducted an identification parade after the said Joseph Njoroge Weru availed himself accompanied by Wamumbi at Karatina police station.
The suspect identified the two cops attached to the local DCI office. A probe later revealed that on January 29, 2026, a missing person report was made at Karatina police station by a woman who reported that her sister namely Beatrice Nyawira aged 23 years was missing.
The reportee was referred to DCI Mathira east office and the following day, the two officers accompanied her to the house of the missing lady where they were staying together with the suspect.
They managed to find the said Joseph Njoroge Weru alone in the house.
The officers then detained Weru and took him to the station for interrogation and later released him on the same day.
It was until February 12 when news of the discovery of the body of Nyawira that the suspect went to make the claims of assassination on the MP, police said.
After the family managed to identify the body of the woman, the suspect was arrested and detained pending further probe, police said.
Police claimed the suspect coined the assassination claims as a coverup to the murder of the woman The probe is ongoing and an autopsy was planned on the body of the woman.
