Mother, Son Found Dead in Suspected Suicide Incident in Athi River

Detectives are investigating an incident in which a mother and her adult son were found dead in the same room after a suspected suicide drama in Athi River, Machakos County.

The two were identified as Catherine Mueni and her son Bosco Mulwa.

The two had left their home in the area on January 29 and headed for Mulwa’s house where the bodies were found.

A brother of Mulwa said the mother told him to prepare their younger sister for school the following day.

On January 30, the mother failed to come back to the house.

This prompted a search that ended up in Mulwa’s house in Samora area where the bodies were found.

Police said Mulwa’s body was hanging on a red electric cable, which was tied around his neck.

The body of the woman lay on the bed with no visible injuries.

It is suspected she swallowed poison.

Both bodies were moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

Police said they are yet to establish the motive of the incident.

Suicide cases have been on the rise amid calls for action to tame the trend.

Three other incidents of suicide were reported in Makueni, Muranga and Meru Counties last week.

Police said they are investigating the incidents.

Police say the trend has been worrying and increasing as up to two cases are reported daily.

The government has been taking measures aimed at addressing the menace.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.
