Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua has written to Speaker Justin Muturi with a bill seeking to limit foreign investors from doing work that Kenyans can do.

The legislator said that Chinese companies were depriving Kenyans a livelihood as they have taken over local supply of goods. He said that local businesses are finding it hard to grow and sell their goods as the goods from China were being sold at a cheaper rate. Gachagua wants the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act  amended to resolve the issue.

“We are staring at a very glaring picture. We are having what I would call the Chinese economic invasion to the republic of Kenya. This people came here slowly and slowly they are kicking the owner of the house out, economically,” says Rigathi.

The proposed bill includes limiting tenders below Sh1 billion to Kenyan investors only. He also said that there should be strict measures while giving the said contracts and should only be given to foreigners if Kenyans cannot do the said job.

The bill also wants to introduce strict punishment on Kenyans who are used by foreigners as proxies to register their companies.

“What is annoying us is that once they get a contract the materials coming for the construction is procured from China, and they import it duty free,” adds the Mathira MP.

This sentiments were also laid bare to  President Uhuru Kenyatta during the Small and Medium enterprises meeting when they said foreigners especially the Chinese were invading on businesses that could be done by Kenyans.
