Two Gusii legislators Sunday vowed to execute a litigation against the National Construction Authority (NCA) over the collapse of a rickety three story building in Suneka, Kisii killing five people.
Charles Onchoke (Bonchari, Kisii) and Steve Mogaka (West Mugirango, Nyamira) accused the agency of dereliction of duty subjecting the country to unnecessarily tragedies.
“The litigation is aimed at pressurising then to put their house in order otherwise we shall continue losing lives to preventable incidents as these,” stated Onchoke.
The three storey building at Itierio, Suneka, was under construction when it suddenly came tumbling early Sunday last week.
Some of the workers on site were killed during the incident.
The ill-fated building also flattened a family house injuring the owners who were inside.
The County later promised free treatment for the victims affected by the destruction.
Several other leaders from the region among them Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Nominated Senator Essy Okenyuri, Woman Representative Donya Toto visited the site and called for action on rogue contractors who cut corners on projects.
A section of Kisii Assembly Wards led by Deputy Speaker Jacob Bagaka and Ichuni Ward MCA Wycliffe Siocha also visited the site and called for investigations.
They especially called on NCA to explain lack of supervision as the building was being set up.
“Someone should explain if the processes were followed to the letter, am especially concerned why there was lack of supervision,” stated Bagaka.
They also singled out NCA officials for censure.
They all cited graft as among factors fueling the construction of illegal structures in the country.
MP Onchoke, in whose constituency the incident occurred, said he would present a censure motion in parliament against the relevant agencies..
“Unless we do this we are in danger as society. We want advance action so as to stem such deaths,” he said during a function in his constituency.
The MP said NCA has a singular constitution authority to reign in on rogue contractors and it begs questions if it was carrying out it’s duties to expected standards.
“The agency has that special mandate to ensure construction is up to required standard and that is why we are concerned as leaders,” stated Onchoke.
Mogaka from Nyamira who accompanied Onchoke described as sad the deaths of the five locals.
