Mudavadi In Japan To Meet Prime Minister Ahead Of Major Africa Development Summit

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has arrived in Yokohama, Japan, ahead of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) set to open on Wednesday.

According to his office, Mudavadi landed in Japan on Monday, August 18, and will participate in all main TICAD plenary sessions and official meetings.

“Early on Tuesday, Dr. Mudavadi will have a meeting with Prime Minister Ishida, visit Yokohama’s city assembly and have a tête-à-tête with Mayor Yamanaka,” the statement reads.

“He will also participate in a public-private business dialogue and witness the signing of memoranda of understanding between Kenya and Japan.”

A key focus of Mudavadi’s visit will be his participation in a special side event on the economic inclusion of displaced persons in Africa. He is expected to showcase Kenya’s Shirika Plan, an initiative launched in March 2025 that aims to transform refugee camps such as Kakuma and Dadaab into integrated settlements offering education, jobs, healthcare and other services to both refugees and host communities.

The event will be hosted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Mudavadi will later receive a courtesy call from the UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, Mr. Raof Mazou.

This year’s TICAD conference is themed “Co-create innovative solutions with Africa.” Started in 1993, the summit is organised by the Government of Japan in partnership with the United Nations, the World Bank and the African Union Commission.
