Mudavadi Leaves for Angola to Represent Ruto at AU Extraordinary Summit
Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has left the country for Luanda, Angola, where he will represent President William Ruto at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU).
The Extraordinary Session is scheduled for August 30, 2026, and will focus on strengthening Africa’s mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution.
According to a statement from Mudavadi’s office on Friday, the meeting will consider practical measures to enhance the continent’s capacity to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts.
“The Luanda meeting comes at an important time for Kenya’s engagement with the African Union and the continent’s peace and security architecture,” the statement said.
Kenya’s participation in the meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the country to advance its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, regional stability and stronger African-led mechanisms for addressing conflicts.
Mudavadi will also use the meeting to advance discussions on regional integration and Africa’s broader development agenda.
The visit comes at a time when Kenya is seeking to strengthen its role and influence within the African Union and contribute to continental discussions on peace and security.
Kenya’s participation in the Extraordinary Session comes shortly after the country attained Tier One status within the African Union.
The elevation is expected to give Kenya a stronger platform to participate in shaping discussions and decisions on matters affecting the continent.
It also provides the country with an opportunity to contribute more prominently to the formulation of continental policies and priorities.
Under President Ruto’s administration, Kenya has increasingly positioned itself as an active player in continental affairs, particularly on peace and security, regional integration, economic development, climate action and multilateral diplomacy.
The Government said Kenya’s engagement in regional and continental initiatives is aimed at translating the country’s diplomatic influence into tangible benefits for Kenyans while contributing to peace and stability across Africa.
“Kenya’s active engagement in regional and continental initiatives reflects the Government’s determination to ensure that the country’s diplomatic influence is translated into tangible benefits for Kenyans, while contributing to a more peaceful, stable and prosperous Africa,” the statement said.
The Luanda meeting will provide Kenya with an opportunity to work with other African countries on strengthening continental approaches to conflict prevention and resolution.
The Government said the discussions will support efforts to develop stronger African-led solutions to challenges affecting the continent.
Mudavadi’s participation will also reinforce Kenya’s continued engagement with the AU and its efforts to play a greater role in shaping Africa’s peace, security and development agenda.
