This weekend’s Shell Autox and Autox Plus Championship served up a heartwarming family affair at the weekend, with the mother-and-son team of Safina Khan and Ahil Khan relishing the thrill of dirt racing at the iconic WRC SSS Racetrack.

For youngster Ahil, it was a baptism of fire. He drove a new car only acquired on Friday, with no prior test, but defied the lack of seat time to put in a mature and competitive drive.

The family-run outfit featured Safina Khan piloting an N12 machine, while Ahil piloted the ex-Zameer Verjee N10.

Behind the team’s impressive showing was Team Principal Adil Khan, a diehard Subaru man who supervises all team operations and continues to instil the Subaru spirit in his crew.

“Born with Subaru, die with Subaru,” Adil quipped when prodded to explain his family’s Subaru craze.

Despite the different machinery and experience levels, the team showed great camaraderie, with mum and son sharing notes and pushing each other on a dusty and technical course.
