A conflict is brewing between Kenya power and the Mumias sugar company. A few weeks ago the Kenya power switched off power supply for the sugar company.

The sugar company has since retaliated by blocking Kenya power from accessing the two substations that are within the companies premises.

Mumias sugar company has in turn asked Kenya power to pay for rent for the substation which they claimed has not been paid for a long time.

This dispute began in  when the Kenya power switched off the supply and they were forced to use generators during milling increasing the cost of sugar production.

“We have an ongoing dispute with Kenya Power. We have been depending on it for electricity to start the factory to enable us shift to electricity from our plant,”the then chairman Dan Ameyo had stated.

Mumias has been experiencing a hard financial time dropping from East Africa’s largest sugar company producing over 250,000 tonnes a year, to the current situation, producing 15,891 tonnes in the year ended last June.
