Murkomen says at least 2,000 guns recovered from bandits in operations
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has praised the work of the Special Operations Group (SOG), saying the elite multi-agency unit has played a key role in significantly reducing banditry and terrorism in the Kerio Valley and other parts of the country.
Murkomen said the unit’s operations had led to the seizure of more than 2,000 firearms and 1,500 rounds of ammunition from bandits and terrorist groups.
The Cabinet Secretary spoke on Thursday while presiding over the 11th Special Operations Group graduation ceremony at Kamanga Training Camp in Samburu County.
He congratulated the 122 officers who completed the rigorous six-and-a-half-month training programme, urging them to uphold professionalism, discipline and integrity as they embark on their specialised duties.
“You are called upon to confront violent extremism, disrupt organised criminal networks, combat cross-border threats, protect critical national infrastructure, and support specialised operations where precision, discipline, and professionalism are paramount,” Murkomen told the graduating officers.
He described the graduates as an important addition to the country’s security architecture, saying they would strengthen Kenya’s capacity to respond to emerging security threats.
Murkomen also commended the collaboration between the National Intelligence Service and the National Police Service in training and deploying specialised officers to tackle complex security challenges.
The Cabinet Secretary reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting reforms in the security sector to build a more effective, modern and people-centred security service capable of addressing evolving threats.
The graduation ceremony was attended by Director-General of the National Intelligence Service Noordin Haji, Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, and other senior security officials.
