Members of the Nairobi County Assembly want the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to stop poking its nose in the impeachment of county Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

Nairobi county assembly members led by Majority leader Ibrahim Abdi Hassan asked the EACC to stick to its job description and jurisdiction.

He urged the commission to end perennial corruption facing the county instead of engaging in matters that don’t concern it.

“They should end mega corruption instead of issuing circulars summoning the members of county assembly to appear before them concerning the Elachi ouster at City Hall,” he pointed out.

Abdi said what transpired during the ouster of Speaker Beatrice Elachi on Monday was being investigated by the powers and privileges committee of the county assembly.

Speaking during the county members’ retreat held at Sai Rock beach hotel in Nyali, Mombasa county, the majority leader told journalists what transpired at the office of the county speaker is before the committee on powers and privileges which will come up with the recommendations for the anti-corruption body.

Abdi urged the commission to arrest MPs who fought when they were passing the controversial amendment on security in 2016.

He said the then deputy speaker Joyce Laboso who was chairing the debate was hit with several water bottles but nothing has happened so far.

“What is so special about the county assembly case that it is so different from what happened at the national assembly?” he posed.

Meanwhile, the labour court has extended orders barring the MCAs from removing impeaching Elachi.

Justice Stephen Radido dismissed preliminary objections by the county assembly members who argued that orders issued by Justice Maureen Onyango had been obtained unlawfully.
