Tourism CS Najib Balala has confirmed that 9 out of the 11 Rhinos translocated from Nairobi and Nakuru National Parks on Ksh100 Million budget died during the transfer.

The CS confirmed that only two of the Rhinos survived and the cause of death still unknown.

Senior officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife, local and international experts will conduct an autopsy on the animals to discover the cause of the death and put together a comprehensive report to be concluded within a week.

CS Balala confirmed that the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) will not be involved in the investigations.

18 horns recovered from the Rhinos were equipped with transmitter chips and will be available for viewing on Thursday at the Kenya Wildlife Service headquarters in Nairobi.

“We will be transparent and we will be public in every information that is required,” he vowed.

The CS said that the KWS institution should be held responsible and not him because he only deals with policies and does not execute or approve matters on wildlife transfer.

Kenyans online read foul play into the unfortunate incident because information was not shared immediately with the public and so much money was involved in the transfer of the endangered wildlife.
