NBC Host Sara Gore Announces Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Temporary Break From Television Duties

Television presenter Sara Gore has announced she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will temporarily step away from her hosting roles on Open House and New York Live as she begins treatment and surgery.

Speaking during Thursday’s episode of New York Live, the 49-year-old host shared the personal update directly with viewers.

“It just felt right to tell you myself. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and I’m going to be stepping away for treatment and surgery,” she said, adding candidly: “If I didn’t say that I was a little bit scared, I’d be lying.”

Gore explained that her medical history placed her at higher risk, noting that both her mother and sister had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer. While she had long expected the possibility, she said the reality still came as an emotional shock.

“I always knew I was high-risk. I always assumed this day would come. But let me tell you, you are never ready,” she said. “Even when you catch it early because you’re doing everything right, it is an emotional blow.”

She described the diagnosis as both unexpected and deeply affecting. “I wasn’t ready for that. That actually really surprised me. It really stung,” she said.

Despite the difficult news, Gore said she is receiving strong support from her medical team and family.

“I know it’s going to sting for a minute. You know what? It’s stinging right now,” she said. “But I also know that I am exactly where I need to be, and I’m surrounded by incredible doctors and people who are taking such good care of me at home.”

She also expressed gratitude to her colleagues, referring to them as her “work family” and saying she feels “loved” and “very supported.”

Gore ended her announcement on an optimistic note, saying she is choosing to look for meaning in the experience.

“I’m choosing to believe that maybe there is a gift in this, even if I don’t fully understand what it is yet,” she said. “It’s already a precious reminder of how precious life is and how important it is to focus on what really matters.”

She concluded with a message of hope for viewers: “I’m going to come back better than ever, and I’m going to see you on the other side of this.”
