Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday put on hold Presidential election to February 23, 2019.
This was a mere five hours until the polls opened for the two day exercise.
One of the reasons cited for delaying the crucial vote was the logistics problem. According to sources, election materials were yet to be delivered to all parts of the country.
“Proceeding with the election as scheduled is no longer feasible,” commission chairman Mahmood Yakubu said.
The difficult decision was reached in order to ensure the vote was free and fair.
The parliamentary vote will also take place on the 23rd day of February as governorship, state assembly and federal area council elections have been rescheduled to Saturday 9 March.
Earlier the two main political factions; All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had accused each other of trying to manipulate the elections.
In what has been a heated campaigning season, a couple of INEC offices have been set on fire and electronic smart card readers and voter cards destroyed.
Many Nigerians will wake up to the rude shock of delayed polls even as some had already traveled to ensure they exercised their civil right.
Security had been beefed up and movement restricted.
