Governor Mike Sonko has told a senate committee that his delay in nominating a deputy governor for Nairobi is a non issue.
The Nairobi governor was summoned by senators to explain why he had not presented a name for the position of the deputy governor fifteen months after Polycarp Igathe resigned from the position.
He said that he was not compelled by any legislation to nominate a governor. He asked Senate and the National assembly to pass legislation requiring him to nominate a deputy governor before summoning him.
“There is no legislation to compel me to nominate a deputy governor In the spirit of handshake I received 2 letters from NASA and communication from NASA leader when I was about to table my 2nd nominations for DG I also received communication from Raphael Tuju,” he said.
He said that there was no need of calling the senators to discuss a non issue. He said that the Nairobi senator was not being genuine
“If Senator Sakaja was genuine, he could have summoned me…he is my friend and we campaigned together. I do not think there was any need of calling honorable senators to come deal with this non-issue,” Sonko said.

Sonko also insinuated that Sakaja was pushing him because he wanted to succeed him as Nairobi governor in 2022, claims the latter denied.
“..that statement needs to be withdrawn. I have never declared anywhere that I want to be the governor of Nairobi. In any case, I am a Kenyan and if I want to vie I am free to do so,” the lawmaker said.
“In any public record, I have never made that declaration… I am looking at issues objectively as the senator of Nairobi and I will continue to exercise my mandate,” he added.
