Nyamira ECDE teachers call off strike after deal with county government
Nyamira County Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers called off their industrial action after reaching an agreement with the county government on their grievances.
The teachers ended the strike on Monday, September 21, 2026, following a meeting between officials of the Kenya Union of Pre-Primary Education Teachers (KUNOPPET), Nyamira Branch, and the county government.
“With the deal signed we are going to class,” part of the statement said.
The agreement was reached Monday afternoon at the Governor’s Boardroom following consultations held on the instructions of Governor Amos Nyaribo.
Among the key demands they had raised by the was the signing of a recognition agreement between the county government and KUNOPPET.
The union also demanded the deduction and remittance of members’ union dues and payment of salaries in line with recommendations by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Governor, the county government has agreed to sign a recognition agreement with KUNOPPET.
The administration also said teachers’ union dues would be deducted and remitted to the union upon completion of the required statutory processes.
The county government further announced that salaries of all ECDE teachers employed on permanent and pensionable terms had been adjusted in the September 2026 payroll.
A major development for teachers employed on contract is the county government’s commitment to convert their contracts to permanent and pensionable terms by July 1, 2027.
The agreement is expected to bring to an end the disruption of learning in ECDE centres across the county occasioned by the industrial action.
The county government has directed all ECDE teachers to return to their respective stations by Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
The agreement was signed following negotiations between the county government and KUNOPPET officials.
