A suspected thief was shot and wounded after he slashed and injured a police officer in Kibera slums, Nairobi.

Police said the victim and the police officer were both admitted to hospital following the Friday dawn drama.

According to Nairobi police commander Issa Mohamud, two police officers were on under cover patrols along Lindi Road in the area when a group of about six men attacked them.

One of the men reportedly drew a panga and slashed one of the cops in the left hand which prompted a scuffle, police said.

It was then that the officer drew his pistol and shot the said assailant in the left ankle. A mob surged at the scene demanding the release of the suspect before a reinforcement of police arrived and took him and their colleague to the hospital.

Police said the suspect will face charges when he is released from hospital.

A panga that was used in the attack was recovered and kept as an exhibit, police said.

Police authorities said they had increased patrols in the area to address such crimes.

Elsewhere in Kabete, Nairobi, a 19-year-old man was found dead in his house following a mob attack incident.

The man had been attacked and seriously wounded on April 9 following claims he was a thief. He retreated to his house where he lay until Thursday when he complained of pain. He was to be taken to hospital when the family found him dead.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending other procedures.

Police discourage mob lynching and want suspects to be surrendered to authorities for processing.

Meanwhile, a 75-year-old man was found burnt to death in a fire incident in Kiambara, Mathira, Nyeri County.

Police said a three roomed timber house caught fire and a team of firefighters from the county government of Nyeri came, together with assistance of members of the public managed to put it off.

It was then found that the owner of the house who stayed alone identified as Peterford Irungu was found burnt beyond recognition. The cause of fire was established and the body was moved to the mortuary for autopsy and investigations, police said.
