Peter Sagan is a Slovak former professional cyclist renowned for his versatility, charisma, and record-breaking achievements in road and mountain biking.
Born on January 26, 1990, in Žilina, Slovakia, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most entertaining and successful riders in modern cycling history.
Sagan competed professionally from 2009 to 2024, amassing 121 victories across various disciplines, including stage races, classics, and world championships.
Known for his unconventional style, bike-handling skills, and playful personality, he earned nicknames like “Terminator” and “Rambo” for his strength and resilience.
Siblings
Peter has three siblings, an older brother, Juraj Sagan, who is also a professional cyclist, and an older sister, Daniela Gardianová, and another older brother, Milan Sagan.
Juraj raced from 2010 to 2022, winning four Slovak National Road Race Championships and often supporting Peter on the same teams, such as Liquigas, Bora-Hansgrohe, and TotalEnergies.
Peter and Juraj dominated the Slovak national championships from 2011 onward, alternating wins in a brotherly rivalry described as “one for you, two for me.”
Career
Sagan began cycling at age nine with a local club in Žilina, initially excelling in mountain biking and cyclocross before transitioning to road racing.

He won the junior cross-country title at the 2008 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships and turned professional in 2009 with Liquigas-Doimo after impressing in tests despite early rejections.
His breakthrough came in 2010 with stage wins at Paris-Nice and the Tour of California, establishing him as a sprinter and classics specialist.
Sagan joined teams like Cannondale, Tinkoff, Bora-Hansgrohe, and TotalEnergies, riding alongside brother Juraj for much of his career.
He secured victories in Monuments such as Tour of Flanders in 2016 and Paris-Roubaix in 2018, and claimed stages in all three Grand Tours, including 12 at the Tour de France.
After announcing his road retirement in 2023 following the Tour de France, Sagan returned to mountain biking in 2024 with Specialized Factory Racing, aiming for Olympic qualification but ultimately focusing on events like the Tour de Hongrie and Tour de Slovakia.
Accolades
Sagan’s trophy cabinet boasts three consecutive UCI Road World Championships from 2015 to 2017, making him the first male rider to achieve this feat across three continents.
He holds the record for seven Tour de France points classifications (green jerseys) from 2012 to 2019, along with 12 stage wins there, four at the Vuelta a España, and two at the Giro d’Italia.
Additional highlights include three Gent-Wevelgem victories, two Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec wins, and 18 Tour de Suisse stages.
Sagan topped the UCI World Ranking in 2016 and received the Vélo d’Or as the year’s best rider that same year.
