Pierre Schoeman is a professional rugby union player who plays as a loosehead prop.
Born on 7 May 1994 in Nelspruit (now Mbombela), South Africa, he stands approximately 1.84 metres tall and weighs around 118 kilograms.
He attended Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) in Pretoria, a school known for producing notable sports figures, and later studied at the University of Pretoria.
Schoeman began his career in South African rugby before moving to Scotland, where he has represented Edinburgh Rugby since 2018 and qualified for the Scotland national team through residency.
He is known for his powerful carrying, scrummaging strength, energetic style of play, and the enthusiastic “Schooo” chants from fans.
Siblings
Pierre has one known sibling, his older brother Juan Louw Schoeman, born on 18 September 1991 in Pretoria.
Juan is also a professional rugby union player who operates as a loosehead prop.
The brothers grew up together in South Africa, first in the Nelspruit area near Kruger National Park and later in Pretoria after their parents’ divorce.
Juan, being about three years older, often played a significant role in Pierre’s early life, including through competitive childhood rugby games in the garden and later providing support during family challenges.
Juan has played for teams including the Blue Bulls, Sharks, Southern Kings, Bath in England’s Premiership, and more recently the Golden Lions and Lions in South Africa.
Career
Schoeman’s rugby journey began in the Blue Bulls academy in Pretoria around 2010.
He represented the side at youth tournaments, including the Under-16 Grant Khomo Week and Under-18 Craven Week, and earned caps for South Africa at Under-18 and Under-20 levels, featuring at the 2014 Junior World Championship.

He made his professional debut in the Vodacom Cup and progressed to Super Rugby with the Bulls, while also appearing for the Blue Bulls in domestic competitions.
In 2018 he signed with Edinburgh Rugby ahead of the 2018-19 season, quickly establishing himself as a regular starter and key forward in the Pro14 (later United Rugby Championship) and European competitions.
He qualified for Scotland through residency and made his international debut against Tonga in October 2021, scoring a try in a victory.
Schoeman became a consistent presence in the Scotland squad, featuring regularly in the Six Nations, Autumn Nations Series, and the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
By the mid-2020s he had accumulated more than 50 caps for Scotland and contributed multiple tries.
In 2025 he was selected for the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia, earning recognition as Lion number 868 and featuring in warm-up matches.
Accolades
In his debut season with Edinburgh in 2018-19, Schoeman was named both Best Newcomer and Player of the Year at the club’s end-of-season awards, recognising his immediate impact and consistent performances.
He has earned man-of-the-match honours, including notable displays in 1872 Cup matches against Glasgow Warriors.
At international level he has scored multiple tries for Scotland, including on debut, and reached significant milestones such as 50 caps.

Off the field he has received community recognition, including Edinburgh’s Community Player of the Year after raising substantial funds for charity by shaving his distinctive blonde hair.
