    Journalist Walter Menya in Court

    Kenya police has applied to detain journalist Walter Menya for an extra 3 days after he was presented in court this morning and charged with soliciting bribes to write a favourable story.

    According to an affidavit sworn by police investigating officer Moses Gituathi, Walter Menya solicited Ksh 50,000 between 15th and 17th June out of which Ksh 32,000 was transferred to him on various dates through M-Pesa and the balance was to be collected in person in Buru Buru on the day of the arrest.

    Affidavit sworn in court;

    The affidavit further indicate that the complainant is one Kennedy Koros who wanted a story “Civil Servants in JAP Say All They Want is to Alleviate Poverty”, a story which the complainant allegedly bribed the writer to pen and publish.

    The application is to enable the police to go to his residence and work place to collect more evidence to support the case. It is not clear why the police had to arrest him without enough evidence. CID officers are fond of making such applications in court and the same are used to ensure that suspects are illegally detained and punished in the process without proof of crime.

    It is not clear why the giver of the bribe has not been arrested but we will be following this story with keen interest.
