Police officer found dead in river in Nandi County

A police officer is feared to have drowned after his body was found floating in River Abundas in Tinderet Sub-County, Nandi County.
The body, believed to be that of Police Constable Obadiah Nyametia, was discovered at around 2pm on October 5, 2026, in Chepsweta Sub-Location, Chemase Location, police said.
According to police, Nyametia had not been seen since the morning of the same day, prompting concerns over his whereabouts.
A team visited the scene and recovered the body.
The body was subsequently moved to Kapsabet Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it will undergo a postmortem examination to establish the cause and circumstances of his death.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The circumstances surrounding the death were not clear, police said on Tuesday amid investigations.
Elsewhere, a 64-year-old man drowned in River Aludeka in Teso Central Sub-County, Busia County, after he allegedly slipped and fell into the river while under the influence of alcohol.
The deceased, identified as George Okoth Omunyin, is reported to have drowned at around 10am on October 5, 2026, at Lukolis ‘A’ Village in Akooret Location.
According to police, Omunyin was suspected to have been intoxicated when he slipped and fell into the river.
His body was retrieved and no visible injuries were noted.
Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel processed and documented the scene before the body was taken to Alupe University Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Meanwhile, a 44-year-old man was found dead at Silanga Dam in Nyandarua Central Sub-County, in an incident being treated as a suspected drowning.
The deceased was identified as Joshua Ekeno, a Turkana male adult.
The body was retrieved from the dam and no physical injuries were noted.
It was subsequently moved to JM Kariuki Hospital Mortuary, where it was preserved pending an autopsy to establish the exact cause of death.
