President Uhuru Kenyatta through the State House Comptroller Kinuthia Mbugua has come to the aid of Gor Mahia, offering them 30 air tickets to Algeria.

K’Ogalo will fly Kenyan flag on Wednesday when they face USM Alger in Algeria in their final Group D match of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Gor tops the group jointly with the Algerian side and avoiding defeat away could guarantee them a historic spot in the quarterfinals of the continental competition.

The club had called for help from well-wishers to enable them honor the fixture citing high costs of travelling to North Africa.

A cheap air ticket to Algeria currently costs slightly over Ksh. 200k and the record Kenyan champions needed around Ksh. 8m to facilitate the whole trip including accommodation and other expenses.

“On behalf of Gor Mahia I want to thank the president for coming to our aid. It is not cheap travelling to Algeria and we commend his kind gesture and promise not to let the country down,” Gor’s Treasurer Sally Bolo told Kahawa Tungu.

CAF gives clubs around Ksh. 27m to aid their participation in the competition at the group level but the amount is not enough to cover six matches at the stage and most clubs struggle financially to honor the fixtures.

Gor, who thumped Sofapaka 3-0 on Wednesday in a mid-week Kenyan Premier League fixture, will take on their arch rivals AFC Leopards on Saturday in the Mashemeji Derby before they jet out to Algeria.
