Probe after Sh1.5 million disappears from parked vehicle in Kirinyaga 

Detectives in Kirinyaga County launched investigations after Sh1.5 million reportedly disappeared from a locked vehicle in Kutus town under unclear circumstances.

The incident happened on April 1, 2026 involving a Director of Survey at the Kirinyaga County Government. He stated that he had withdrawn the cash from a local bank at approximately 3:00pm.

He then drove his Nissan double cabin to a local hotel, located a short distance from Kukena Filling Station where he stopped for a meal.

Upon returning to his vehicle, he discovered that the money—kept inside an envelope in the car—was missing, despite the vehicle appearing to have remained locked.

Police visited the scene as part of ongoing investigations.

Authorities have not yet established how the money was stolen, and no arrests have been made so far.

Investigations are ongoing and a team revisited the scene to review security cameras in efforts to get those behind the same.

Such incidents happen out of collusion by insiders, police say.

Elsewhere, police in Gilgil Sub-county, Nakuru County, have launched investigations following a daring night raid in which a gang stole property worth over Sh2 million from a construction yard and an adjacent hotel.

Police said the incident was reported on April 1, 2026, at around 1:45 p.m., though it occurred the previous night.

A security guard deployed at a yard operated by Shandong Construction Company Ltd near Caravan Motel along the Nakuru–Gilgil highway told police that at about 8:46 p.m., two men approached him claiming their lorry had broken down about a kilometre away.

The suspects requested to use his mobile phone—an Oppo A16C valued at Sh16,000—to call a mechanic. However, they quickly turned on him, assaulting and tying him up before locking him inside a room at the adjacent motel along with two hotel staff members.

The gang, believed to have involved more accomplices, then gained access to the yard and made away with construction materials and equipment, including six tonnes of D12 wires, a bending machine, a cutting machine, a 50-metre cable wire, 40 litres of diesel, four batteries, two grader rings, and a surveyor machine. The stolen construction items are valued at approximately Sh1,497,800.

They also broke into Caravan Motel, stealing assorted hotel items including utensils, clothing, 82 chairs, three gas cylinders, poultry feed, a fridge, and other equipment valued at about Sh680,000.

Police believe the suspects used a lorry to ferry the stolen goods from the scene, leaving at around 2:00 a.m. The vehicle has not yet been identified.

Police visited and processed the scene and announced no arrests have been made so far, and efforts to trace the suspects and recover the stolen items are ongoing.
