Quinn Hughes is an American professional ice hockey player who serves as a defenseman in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Known for his exceptional skating, puck-moving ability, vision, and playmaking from the blue line, Hughes has established himself as one of the league’s premier offensive defensemen.

He was selected seventh overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and spent his first seven seasons with the franchise, serving as captain starting in 2023.

In December 2025, he was traded to the Minnesota Wild, where he continues to anchor the defense and contribute significantly to their offense.

Hughes has represented the United States internationally, including at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, where he helped Team USA secure gold.

    Siblings

Quinn has two younger brothers who are also established NHL players: Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes.

Jack, born about 19 months after Quinn, is a highly skilled center drafted first overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

Luke, the youngest of the three, is a defenseman selected fourth overall by the Devils in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft and plays alongside Jack in New Jersey.

The Hughes brothers are the only American trio to be selected in the first round of the NHL Draft, and they have frequently been highlighted together, including appearing on the cover of the NHL 25 video game.

Quinn and Jack both represented Team USA at the 2026 Olympics, contributing to the men’s gold medal win, while Luke supported from afar.

    Career

Hughes began his hockey journey in a family deeply immersed in the sport, with early development influenced by his parents’ coaching and playing backgrounds.

He played youth hockey in various locations as the family moved for his father’s coaching roles before starring at the University of Michigan, where he recorded strong offensive numbers from the blue line over two seasons.

He signed his entry-level contract with the Canucks after his sophomore year and made his NHL debut in the 2019–20 season.

In Vancouver, Hughes quickly emerged as a dynamic defenseman, setting franchise records for assists and points by a blueliner.

He earned Calder Trophy finalist honors as a rookie and developed into a cornerstone player, leading the Canucks in scoring during several seasons and captaining the team during a competitive period.

His 2023–24 campaign stood out, as he posted a career-high 92 points (17 goals, 75 assists) in 82 games, leading all defensemen and earning the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman—the first in Canucks history.

Injuries and team transitions marked later years, culminating in a blockbuster trade to the Minnesota Wild in December 2025 in exchange for multiple assets, including prospects and a first-round pick.

With the Wild, he has continued his elite production, contributing high assist totals and helping elevate the team’s performance toward playoff contention.

Internationally, Hughes has competed in World Junior Championships and shone at the 2026 Olympics, setting records for assists and points by a defenseman in an Olympic tournament featuring NHL players.

    Accolades

Hughes won the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2024 as the league’s best defenseman and has been named to the NHL First All-Star Team (2024) and Second All-Star Team (2025).

He has multiple NHL All-Star Game selections and earned Calder Trophy finalist recognition in his rookie season.

On the international stage, he contributed to Team USA’s gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics, earning Olympic All-Star Team honors and setting records for most assists and points by a defenseman in a single Olympic tournament with NHL participants.

He also holds various Vancouver Canucks franchise records for defensemen in assists and points.

Additional accolades include strong rookie-year honors such as NHL All-Rookie Team and leading rookie defensemen in several statistical categories.
